Smoke Alarms
Smoke alarms save lives. Smoke alarms that are properly installed and maintained play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries. If there is a fire in your home, smoke spreads fast and you need smoke alarms to give you time to get out.
Here’s what you need to know about HMO’s!
- A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire. Install smoke alarms in every bedrooms room and outside each separate sleeping area. Install alarms on every level of the home.
- Smoke alarms should be interconnected. When one sounds, they all sound.
- Large homes may need extra smoke alarms.
- Test your smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working.
- Today’s smoke alarms will be more technologically advanced to respond to a multitude of fire conditions, yet mitigate false alarms.
- When a smoke alarm sounds, get outside and stay outside.
- Replace all smoke alarms in your home every 10 years.
What are FireAngel Interlinked smoke and heat detectors?
FireAngel interlinked fire alarm system is a network of fire detectors that are connected to each other. When one detector detects smoke or fire, it sends a signal to all the other detectors in the network, causing them to sound an alarm as well. This helps to ensure that everyone in the building is alerted to the danger, even if they are not in the same room as the fire.
Standalone alarms in the home are somewhat limited in the surrounding areas that they can detect, and the distance their sound can travel. For instance, tenants may not always hear the alarm in the kitchen unless they’re close by, or the closest individual to the sounding alarm may be unable to detect it – as seen in the BBC News study which found that 27 out of 34 children will sleep through a smoke alarm sounding at night.
FireAngel Heat, smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms are all interlinked throughout the home – continually communicating via wireless signals – which means that as soon as one detects a problem, the rest of the alarms will sound, mimicking the originating alarm’s specific sound pattern. So, if a carbon monoxide alarm activates, all the smoke and heat alarms will mimic its sound pattern (and vice versa).  Not only does this quickly alert all tenants to the problem, regardless of where they are in the premises, but this also signifies the appropriate next steps e.g. opening all doors and windows then evacuating in the event of a CO alarm.
Where Should I Install A Carbon Monoxide Alarm?
Carbon monoxide alarms should be installed in rooms with fuel-burning appliances, such as a gas boiler, fireplace or wood stove – as well as any room where a flue passes through – as CO is produced when then become faulty, badly installed or incorrectly maintained. These should be in homes, workplaces, and schools.
In England and Wales, all rented accommodation and holiday homes that are rented out must have a carbon monoxide detector in any room with a carbon-fuelled appliance. In Scotland, carbon monoxide detectors with a sealed lithium battery are compulsory in every room with a carbon-fuelled appliance or a flue.
Carbon monoxide is colourless and odourless, and you won’t be able to detect it without a detector. So, if your detector goes off, trust it and swiftly take action.
