The importance of fire extinguishers.
Fire extinguishers play a vital role in any fire protection plan in any environment. They are a first aid response to fire and can help prevent catastrophic damage to property and even loss of life.
If you’re a business or property owner, legislation holds you responsible for the provision of appropriate firefighting equipment on the premises – and this legislation rules that you ensure maintenance and regular inspections of the fire extinguishers are kept up to.Â
Complying with fire safety legislation.
Employers and property owners must comply with the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. The Order applies to virtually all premises and every type of building, including offices and shops, care homes, hospitals, schools, hotels and factories. It’s your responsibility to carry out a fire risk assessment and you must, as far as is reasonably practical, ensure that everyone on the premises can safely escape a fire. That includes installing fire extinguishers to provide the means of fighting a small fire.
Maintenance, inspections and reviews.
Ensuring your premises’ fire extinguishers are within easy reach and clearly visible and identifiable in an emergency is important. Positioning of fire extinguishers is worked out based on the class of fire risk/fire extinguisher.Â
Our Guide to Choosing the Correct Fire Extinguisher
To ensure you’re adequately protected, and you meet current fire safety regulations, you need to have the right types of fire extinguisher for your business premises.
There are different ‘classes’ of fire, for which each extinguisher is designed to tackle. These classes are based on which fuels a fire starts with. It’s the presence of these fuels within your business premises that will help determine which types of fire extinguisher you need and in which locations. As well as the right type of fire extinguisher, you’ll also need the right size and weight of each extinguisher.
There are six classes of fire in total.
- Class A fires – combustible materials: caused by flammable solids, such as wood, paper, and textiles
- Class B fires – flammable liquids: such as petrol, paint or spirits
- Class C fires – flammable gases: like propane and butane
- Class D fires – flammable metals: chemicals such as magnesium, lithium or potassium
- Electrical fires – electrical equipment: such as computers and photocopiers. Note though that once the electrical item is removed, the fire changes class
- Class F fires – cooking oils: such as olive oil or butter. Typically a chip-pan fire
