Why Interlinked smoke detectors are better than standalone smoke alarms.
When smoke and carbon monoxide (CO) alarms are interconnected, each alarm can now tell you when there’s smoke or carbon monoxide in any room that has a smoke/CO alarm. A traditional alarm can alert you to the presence of smoke, fire or carbon monoxide, but it can only detect the area around it.
Interconnected alarms are safer
Interconnected smoke alarms are safer than standalone smoke alarms, because they let you know about an emergency sooner. Even if you’re in the house, you may not be close to the area where the fire started.
Required for new home constructions
Because of their many benefits, including safety and early warning, many states now require interconnected smoke alarms for new home construction.
Wireless Interconnect
In the past, interconnection had to be hard wired between smoke/carbon monoxide alarms. Now smoke/CO alarms can be interconnected wirelessly, without requiring expensive retrofits. With wireless interconnect, you can easily retrofit existing homes and get them up to code.
Interlinked smoke detectors.
A new law requiring every home in Scotland to have interlinked smoke alarms has come into force.
At the heart of this change is a push to improve fire safety in our homes. More than 40 people were killed in house fires in Scotland in 2020/21 and, on average, 30% of blazes started in the living room.
The Scottish government has said the interlinked alarms would “significantly reduce the risk of injury or death” by giving residents more time to escape a fire.
”Over the past year, I have seen multiple UK based fires which, unfortunately, ended in deaths, and the sad fact is that they could have been prevented. With interlinked fire alarms and control panels people have more time to exit the building and get out of harms way. With a 10+ year battery life on our alarms and control panels, you’ll have guaranteed, fast and accurate information about your property, to aid your escape in the event of a fire.”
I am calling on the UK Government to change the law in England. Adopting the new legislation, in line with the Scottish Government, will help save lives by giving people a better chance in the event of fire.”
